Weather Router Walt Hack Dies at 59
Well-known yachting weather router Walter 'Walt' Hack, 59,
died at his home in Fanwood, NJ, Sept. 20, after a three-year battle
with pancreatic cancer.
Walt was a graduate of Villanova University. As an officer in
the U.S. Navy for five years during the Vietnam War, Walt earned a
Distinguished Service Medal and a graduate degree in meteorology, which
led to his career in meteorology. Leaving the Navy in 1973, he went to
work for Bendix Corporation in Teterboro, New Jersey, doing
meteorological forecasting and commercial ship routing. He worked at
Bendix for more through 20 years through several changes in ownership.
With the dream of owning his own business, Walt began night
classes and later earned a master's degree in business from Union
College in Union, NJ. He founded Ocean Marine Navigation Inc. in 1994,
offering weather routing services to a rapidly growing client list made
up almost entirely of large motor yachts.
One of his first yachting customers, during his Bendix years,
was Bruce Kessler, who completed a circumnavigation aboard his Delta 70
Zopilote in the early 1990s. In frequent communications on Kessler's
round-the-world trip, the two became good friends. 'I always had
complete confidence in Walt Hack's forecasts,' Kessler said. 'He routed
me over tens of thousands of ocean miles, and repeatedly he steered us
around and away from bad weather. Walt was a gentle genius and a great
mentor.'
Always personable and low key, over the years Walt was the
professional weather router for many organized events, including the
Nordhavn Atlantic Rally which saw 18 motor yachts and over 100 people
cross the North Atlantic in 2004.
Walt Hack is survived by his wife of 36 years, Marcia who is
a teacher; a son, David Walter Hack who is a physician; a daughter
Jennifer Hack Collins who is an attorney; and two grandchildren,
Walt's associate, Bob Jones, will continue to offer professional
weather routing services and manage the operational side of OMNI. Bob
was Walt's stand-in and assistant for more than six years, taking an
increasingly active role in the company's weather routing after Walt
was stricken with cancer.
'I look forward to continuing to provide custom weather
routing to our yachting clients in the Walt Hack tradition of
excellence,' Bob Jones said.
